Peter O’Hara, Founder & Chief Executive, OLM Group
Following a career in Health and Local Government, Peter established OLM Systems in 1991 to focus on developing and delivering case management solutions to the social care sector. Over the next 25 years Peter has led OLM to a market leading position and has seen the business grow employing 200+ staff across its 4 businesses from 5 locations in the UK. To date the company has grown organically with no borrowings or external funding and continues to re-invest all its profits back into the business, Peter established OLM Group to invest in new areas of business covering technology solutions, business consultancy and multi-media. OLM Group today offers a diverse portfolio covering application software development, technology and infrastructure design, digital engagement platforms, publishing and information content and data services and specialist business consultancy across the Health and Social Care sector.
In addition to founding OLM Systems, Peter acquired 10 businesses including Pavilion Publishing and Media based in Brighton & Hove City, which continues to trade as a separate business; was co-founder and primary investor in Peppermint Technology, specialists in Legal Services IT solutions (sold as part of an MBO backed by SEP in December 2015); co-founded Valuing Care Financial Management to provide best value benchmarking services to the care sector; and Partners for Change, a business consultancy working on person-centred care models.
Peter’s latest venture, established in 2014, is Nalanda Technology, specialising in search and discovery, based in Hillington near Glasgow.
Prior to setting up OLM Group, Peter held several public sector posts in education, health and local government in Scotland and London. Peter developed a participative methodology for systems development that was widely researched and evaluated at the time. Also during this period, he published a range of articles and undertook public lectures on “User Centred Systems Development”, “Managing Social Service in the 90’s”, “IT Strategies for Social Care Organisations” and “Project Management in Complex Organisational Environments”. Peter limits his writing these days to the odd Tweet @olmpeter.
Peter was born educated and grew up in Gourock Scotland. He studied at Glasgow College of Technology and then worked for the Greater Glasgow Health Board before deciding to continue education. He completed a BA in Economics with Politics at Queen Mary’s College London, where he was also elected as the President of the Student Union and as a student member of the Board of Governors for two years.
Peter remains passionate about utilising technology to make a difference to people’s lives and remains actively engaged in OLM focusing on the strategic direction and developments of OLM Group so as to keep the company at the forefront of changes in technology and the care industry. When he is not doing this Peter enjoys living in Kent, wine tasting and most things Italian.
